    The Part Nobody Talks About

Most articles about "your first personal training session" are written by marketing teams. This one's written by someone who's actually done hundreds of first sessions.

I'm Devin, a NASM-certified trainer at Green Door Fitness in Capitol Hill, Denver. I've been the first trainer people work with more times than I can count. Here's what actually happens.

    Before You Walk In

Wear comfortable workout clothes and shoes you can move in. Running shoes work fine. Bring water. Eat something light about an hour before (a banana, some toast, nothing heavy).

That's it. You don't need to be in shape. You don't need to know anything about fitness. You don't need to have a plan. That's literally what I'm here for.

The First 10 Minutes: We Just Talk

I'm going to ask you questions. Not quiz you on exercise science. Just normal stuff:

    • What brought you in today?
    • Have you trained before? If so, when and what did you do?
    • Any injuries, surgeries, or physical limitations I should know about?
    • What does your typical day look like? (Desk job, active job, kids, etc.)
    • What's your goal? And I want the real one, not the polished version.

Some people say "I want to lose weight." Others say "I want to not be out of breath when I play with my kids." Both are great answers. I just need to know where we're headed.

    The InBody Scan

At Green Door, your first session includes an InBody body composition scan. You stand on a machine for about 60 seconds and it measures your muscle mass, body fat percentage, water balance, and segmental lean mass (basically, how much muscle is in each arm, each leg, and your trunk).

This isn't about making you feel bad about a number. It's a baseline. When we scan you again in 4-6 weeks, we'll see exactly what changed. It takes the guesswork out of "is this working?"

    Your First Workout

Here's what it won't be: a "destroy you on day one" situation. I've seen trainers at other gyms run people into the ground during their first session, probably thinking it shows how tough the program is. All it does is make people sore for a week and not want to come back.

Your first workout is about two things:

    1. Movement screening. I'll have you do basic movements: squat, hinge (bending to pick something up), push, pull, lunge. I'm watching how your body moves. Where are you tight? What's your balance like? Does one side move differently than the other?

    2. Getting you moving. We'll do a real workout, but at a pace that matches where you are right now. If you haven't exercised in a year, we're not loading a barbell on day one. We might use bodyweight, light dumbbells, cables, or machines. You'll break a sweat, but you won't crawl to your car.

The whole session runs about 45-60 minutes.

    After the Session

I'll walk you through a quick cool-down and stretch. Then we'll talk about the plan going forward:

    • How many days per week makes sense for your schedule
    • What your program will focus on (strength, fat loss, mobility, a mix)
    • When to come back

At Green Door, your program gets logged in our system. So if I'm not on the floor when you come in next, another trainer can pull up your program and pick up right where we left off. You're never starting from scratch.

    The Question Everyone Asks

"How sore am I going to be?"

Probably a little. Not a lot. If I do my job right, you'll feel it the next day but it won't stop you from going about your life. I want you to come back in two days, not need a week to recover.

    One More Thing

Nobody is watching you. Nobody is judging you. Everyone in the gym was new at some point. The regulars who look like they've been training for years? They had a first day too. Most of them are way too focused on their own workout to care about yours.

If you're on the fence, just walk in. Green Door Fitness is at 2404 E Colfax Ave in Capitol Hill, Denver. Open Mon-Fri 5:30am-8pm, Sat 7am-2pm, Sun 7am-12pm.

We're running a Summer Starter 10-Pack right now: 10 one-on-one sessions for $599. It's for new clients only, and it's a good way to see if personal training is right for you. Call 720-541-7163 or just show up.
